Sealed with a kiss

The day 12 Nov 2006 was finally here. We were stars for a day, pretty nervous; not sure what to do at times but acted cool. The piece of paper with the vow that we are supposed to read to each other has got just a few sentences; but when you actually start reading it, wow... it felt like a 1 page essay... I did ok i think, my wife took the bullet train! haha rushing thru every word. I have just gotten a life time membership from the 'Hub' Club. Ha! I was told there are privileges, wonder what will it be??? hmmm... :)

Rubbish!

More and more rubbish clients these days. They want to be Creative Directors and Art Directors, they just treat you as desktop artist. They have no respect for designers and can never accept any inputs from the professionals. Worst, some of them even cannot tell the difference between designers and printers, think they need to go for some orientation course. They always think that they know best...

Its been a busy week clearing up these mess, really wish that I can tell some of the clients to go 'fly kite'! How can our local industry ever reach a higher level when the clients here never let the professionals do what they are good at? They employ us as designers and consultants, yet they cannot accept our inputs & recommendations, why do they employ us for???

Rubbish!

Lucky Draw

Lucky Draw never seem to lose its charm. With some patience and certain amount of luck, you might just be rewarded. For the past 30 years I have not won any lucky draw prizes yet, I wonder why? hmmm...

Fat and Depth

Something to ponder about: Get the fat and then go for depth. Depth as in depth of your work and depth of the industry. Its important to have the financial means and support but never forget that you should produce good works.

30 years of my life...

Wow... 30 years of my life has past! That is 10,950 days, 262,800 hours and 15,768,000 mins, I won't want to mention the seconds. That's a lot of time that went past and its seems that I still have got a lot to do, to see and to experience... but at least I know I'm getting engaged this year :). I've been dating for the past 6 years, its time for a new phase of my life with my dear Daffy.

You can't help it and start asking yourself what's next? Win awards? Become famous? Have kids? Strike lottery? Buy house? Buy car? Financially stable? Business soars to higher level, breaks into new grounds/areas? some many things I hope can happen... well, I think I will keep moving and work hard for it.

Who is your enemy?

who is your enemy?
who is your enemy?
the one you set free!

lyrics by a local band, TypeWriter,
which I find it quite apt for some
incident in my career. :)

What's in a name?

What's in a Name? (as in making a name)
Fame - you do it with the right ethics and moral
Shame - you do it otherwise

Unethical and ungrateful

There are advantages of having names that are easy to spell and names that sound like an alphabet. One example is the alphabet 'J'. With names like that, it is easy to spell, easy to pronounce, easy to recall... you can basically just use it anywhere, like submitting it to a publisher. This 'J' submitted a piece of work, firstly he did not credit the studio and secondly from what I believe he did not even get any consent/permission to submit the work. The only thing that wasn't missing in the book was his name, the client (starts with 'H' ends with 'Z') and the project. Other info like the design studio, the CD and the AD were omitted.

I think the names are difficult to spell out, especially when the design studio starts with a 'F' and ends with a 'O', the CD starts with 'Y' ends with 'D', the AD, who this 'J' worked under for the project starts and ends with a 'N', and way too many alphabets
in their names.

It is as if the entire project was done by him only and the client hired him for that, which is not true. The piece of work was awarded to the studio. The work by right and by law (IPOS Law) belongs to the studio and not 'suka suka' just take and submit. He is being unethical as a person and as a designer and also he is not grateful to the design studio and people who gave him the chance to work on the piece of work. Now that the work is published, he has claimed all the credits. I could have thrown in some of Rockson's abbrevation here! Its ok, bad things spread fast! Personally, I feel 'J' has become the worst alphabet, and in time to come, others will find out the truth and agree with me.

I have submitted works to awards competitions and publications before, it is unlikely that the publishers made a mistake of not printing the other names. So, what went wrong?

Staying Ahead

In order not to be imitated or be copied, you have got to be the one in front all the time. If you are prepared to come up with new design, trademarks or icons, be prepared to be copied by others. Learn to let go and give out, you will learn much more from there.

The cycle of life

On one hand I have a friend who passed away and on the other hand a friend is celebrating the brith of his 2nd child. Such is the cycle of life, a lost and a gain, I'm caught in the middle, don't know to be sad or to be happy...

Lost!

The news came as a shock, my brother's best friend was killed in the bahrain ferry accident together with his girlfriend. The accident occurred on 30 March 2006 and we only got the news of the people involved 2 days later. The ferry wasn't licensed to undertake tourist trips and it was overloaded. It was also mentioned that the captain and the crew are not qualified personels. All these happened due to human errors, selfishness and negligence, and resulted in close friends being taken away, it is such a pity! but it is too late now...

I have chatted and played soccer with him before, he's a nice chap. A close of friend of my bro since secondary school days, this lost could have impact my bro a lot. I hope he will be fine. Our condolences to the family and we hope to help in whichever way we can.

Life is fragile... indeed. Treasure all your love ones!

In memory of Lim Sing Wee (27yr old) and his girlfriend, New Hui Zhen (24yr old).
